The Amalfi Curse
by Sarah Penner
GENRE : #DualTimeline #HistoricalMystery #ContemporaryMystery with a dash of #Romance
My rating: ★★★★★
How much would you sacrifice to defend the people you care about, and to honor the final wishes of someone you loved deeply who is no longer here?
This novel weaves together two mesmerizing stories set in two completely different eras: the sun-drenched present day Amalfi Coast and the turbulent early 19th century. In both timelines, two fierce young protagonists hold big, bold dreams that inevitably clash with their sense of duty. And as we all know, every choice brings its own consequences.
π THE PLOT IN A NUTSHELL :
Present Day: Marine archaeologist Haven Ambrose arrives in the breathtaking, sun-kissed haven of Positano with a secret double agenda.
While the world believes she is simply there to document the Amalfi Coast’s historic shipwrecks, Haven is actually hunting for a ghost: a cache of legendary jewels her late father claimed to have seen during his final dive, just weeks before his death.
When an unexpected, irrational maritime disaster claims innocent lives, Haven struggles to process both the tragedy and a crushing setback in her career. Amidst the chaos, she is drawn into the orbit of Enzo—a charismatic, spontaneous local boatman. Together, his boat becomes the ultimate gateway to a mystery far deeper than the ocean itself.
1821: The roots of this mystery lie two centuries deep.
Back then, a tight-knit group of red-haired village women kept dangerous invaders at bay by using powerful incantations to command the currents, causing lethal sea whirlpools to protect their shores. Among them is Mari, a young woman who deeply hates the sea and daydreams of running away with the man she loves... until a sudden tragedy puts her strength to the ultimate, harsh test.
π MY THOUGHTS (My Real Turning Point!)
To be completely honest, this read was a massive leap into the unknown for me.
First of all, I usually don't like fantasy elements, and secondly, I always avoid contemporary settings because I find them less evocative than historical ones.
So, why on earth did I pick this up? Well, the cover was just too beautiful to resist (yes, I know... never judge a book by its cover, but gorgeous artwork is my absolute weakness!). Plus, I was deeply intrigued by the theme of underwater archaeology. And once again, I joyfully discovered that my reading dislikes were nothing but silly prejudices!
| ✨ CAPTIVATING STORYLINES FULL OF TENSION
Both timelines are beautifully developed, masterfully piquing the reader’s curiosity through small, clever details and perfectly alternated chapters.
Piece by piece, the author leads us straight into the beating heart of both eras.
Sarah Penner brillianty teases us with high stakes and suspense, keeping us guessing until the very last page.
I must confess: I found myself actively praying that the book wouldn't end in a dramatic, Romeo-and-Juliet-style tragedy, and I desperately wanted to see the bad guys (or should I say, assholes!) finally get what they deserved.
While both plots offer a sweet, sensual love story, the true core of this novel lies in the ancient magic of the past and the thrilling adrenaline of discovery in the present. They merge into one single, unforgettable mystery.
| π THE GORGEOUS ITALIAN SETTING
- —> π SUNNY POSITANO TODAY:
I have never been to Positano myself, but the author's vivid descriptions made me feel truly present.
Through the eyes of Haven, our contemporary protagonist who narrates everything firsthand, I could easily admire the colorful houses perched on the steep cliffs, the breathtaking views from the terrace of the ancient villa, and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. I could almost feel the warm breeze on my skin during her thrilling Vespa rides through the bustling town, passing by lively shops and tourists climbing the steep stairs.
What moved me even more were the detailed, atmospheric descriptions of Haven and Enzo’s deep-sea dives. Penner perfectly captures the raw excitement of spotting ancient shipwrecks, the sudden chill of the deep water, the confusion when the visibility turns murky, and the contrasting joy of discovering tiny marine creatures.
Reading it made me deeply long for a beautiful seaside holiday on the Amalfi Coast—and perhaps even a visit to the famous Mount Vesuvius, the active volcano that tragically destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD.
- —> π IN THE 1821 STORY:
Here, the author shifts her focus slightly away from the postcard landscapes, focusing instead on the fierce "sea witches" and the ancient spells they cast to protect their coastal village and their men from invading pirates and corsairs. The setting we encounter most often is the open sea itself—waters made turbulent not only by the powerful magic of the women but also by the dark greed of the Mazza brothers, who held a corrupt, dangerous monopoly over the local trade and fleets.
| π THE CHARACTERS & THE MORAL OF THE STORY
This is one of those rare novels where the active cast is incredibly small. Most supporting characters are merely mentioned by the protagonists, stepping onto the stage for just a few lines here and there. Usually, when this happens in movies, I absolutely dislike it. However, Sarah Penner succeeds so brilliantly in hooking the reader's curiosity regarding the fate of the two main heroines (and their loved ones) that the lack of extensive dialogue didn't bother me at all.
- —> Mari De Luca: A sea witch who tragically lost both her mother and sister to the ocean waves. Mari daydreams of escaping the Amalfi Coast to live as far away from the water as possible. Yet, a relentless chain of events keeps dragging her back to her coven and her magic, ultimately forcing her to make heartbreaking choices that go completely against her own happiness.
Her story unfolds beautifully through a blend of third-person narration and the private journal entries of her lover, the English sailor Holmes. - —> Haven Ambrose: Our modern-day heroine, who narrates her journey firsthand. It is absolutely impossible not to root for her!
Haven is deeply honest, incredibly passionate about her work, and a true romantic at heart. Just like us readers, she gets emotional while reading Holmes’s centuries-old diary, praying alongside us for a happy ending.
It is so easy to identify with her, and I truly believe her relatability is one of the main reasons this book is such a massive success.
An Interesting Contrast:
In the historical timeline, our main characters are genuinely good people, yet sheer desperation drives them to make questionable, controversial choices. Because of this, while I desperately cheered for them, I didn't fully fall in love with them.
In the present timeline, however, Haven and Enzo—the charismatic local boatman who accompanies her on her dives—are entirely pure, positive souls.
The Ultimate Takeaway:
Through these parallel journeys, the novel beautifully delivers a profound moral. Fighting evil with evil only tangles the web of life further. On the other hand, letting oneself be guided by a pure, positive sentiment—while completely setting aside one's ego—can lead to unexpected, beautiful outcomes that surpass any planned scenario. (Is life really like this? Sadly, not always. But I absolutely love that in fiction, good still triumphs over evil!)
- —>The Villains and the Assholes: As I mentioned, the antagonists don't get much direct "screen time." Instead, their dark presence looms heavily over the pages through the actions and stories shared by our favorites. To keep this review strictly spoiler-free, I will only say that both the villains of the past and the antagonist of the present are absolute bastards. At several points during the contemporary chapters, I was practically seeing red with fury! Fortunately, the ending delivered a deeply satisfying payoff that left me completely smiling.
| π️ HISTORICAL CONNECTIONS & MY CRITIQUE
One of the things I love most about reading historical fiction is diving deeper into the real history behind the plot.
---> Mount Vesuvius is famous worldwide for destroying Pompeii in 79 AD, and Herculaneum is well known too, but during my post-reading research, I discovered that two other ancient Roman cities were tragically wiped out during that same eruption: Stabiae, and Oplontis. It is a shame they are rarely mentioned in popular culture, as their archaeological remains are just as fascinating!
This brings me to a small but significant critique: the absolute lack of historical notes from the author at the end of the book. In my opinion, historical notes are a duty for any author writing in this genre, even when the story includes magical elements.
--->For instance, the novel features the fascinating waters and treacherous currents around the Li Galli archipelago (also known as Le Sirenuse). Historically, these waters have always been incredibly dangerous and insidiously difficult to navigate. This danger is firmly confirmed by the countless ancient shipwrecks and priceless relics—such as Roman amphorae—discovered hidden on the surrounding seabed. Sharing these real historical tidbits would have added so much depth to the book, and I truly wish the author had included them for her readers!
| π‘ TIZI'S EXTRA RECOMMENDATION:
If you love history as much as I do, I highly recommend checking out the Official Institutional Portal of the Archaeological sites of Pompeii and the other three cities.
It is an absolutely fantastic website! It shows how all four ancient cities looked back then, details the stunning Roman villas you can visit today, and features great YouTube videos with historical insights. They even have a dedicated Children's Archaeological Park, making it an incredibly inclusive and wonderful resource to explore.
|π WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER?
In my opinion, while both love stories are incredibly sweet and pleasant, they lack a bit of emotional pathos. It is true that this novel isn't categorized as a traditional romance, but a slightly more intense focus on lingering glances, subtle courtship, and the emotional weight of a simple kiss would have made the relationships feel far more sensual and exciting.
You don't need explicit sex scenes or racy moments to give a reader butterflies in their stomach or shivers down their spine. I have read beautiful "proper romances" (clean romances with no explicit content) that made me feel like I was fifteen again, making my heart race with just a brush of the hands.
I truly think many readers would have deeply appreciated a little more emotional chemistry and romantic tension between the couples.
The love stories are undeniably lovely, but they just missed that spark of electric anticipation during the falling-in-love phase.
| π€ MY FINAL THOUGHTS
Despite my small criticisms, overall, I found this novel to be a wonderful, refreshing read that I would highly recommend even to young adults.
The language is clear, the narrative flow is engaging, and there are absolutely no gruesome or disturbing scenes. So, if you love mysteries, adventure, and deep-sea thrillers, and you are in need of a light yet captivating read for the summer, this book is an excellent choice!
Thank you all for stopping by and reading my opinion!
Love,
